Washing your Hair before appointment

Washing your hair 12-24 hours before a color or highlight appointment isn’t an absolute necessity, but there are good reasons why hairstylists often recommend it:

  1. Natural Oils: Natural oils from your scalp act as a protective barrier for your hair. Washing your hair too close to a color or highlight appointment can strip away these oils, making your scalp more sensitive to the chemicals used in the coloring process.
  2. Color Adherence: Clean hair can sometimes be too smooth, which might make it difficult for the color or highlights to adhere evenly. Hair that hasn’t been washed for a day or so has a bit more texture and grip, allowing the color to adhere better.
  3. Scalp Protection: The natural oils on your scalp serve as a sort of buffer against potential irritation from the color or bleach. By having those oils present, it may reduce the likelihood of scalp sensitivity or irritation during the coloring process.
  4. Even Color Distribution: For some, freshly washed hair might cause color to penetrate more intensely in certain areas, leading to uneven coloring. Hair that’s a day or two old tends to distribute color more evenly.

However, it’s essential to follow your stylist’s advice, as different hair types and coloring techniques may require varying approaches. If they recommend a different timeline or have specific instructions for your hair type, it’s best to adhere to their guidance for the best results.
